Race Recap: Winter Lights 5K

Friday evening was an interesting mix of rain and cold temperatures but more than 2000 runners toed the starting line in Plymouth, Massachusetts for the Winter Lights 5K. The race kicks off at 6:30 PM and takes runners on an evening stroll through downtown Plymouth and is a great way to continue to ring in the holiday season.

We first ran this race last year with two of our friends and were asked to join again for this year’s run so took them up on the offer. The starting line is packed with runners but the race organizers to a nice job at letting runners off in waves to ensure a little less chaos in the first stretch. That said, the first mile of the race is still pretty crowded with runners clad in blinking lights and Christmas gear so the race is not one where you will likely score a PR but instead it’s a nice run to go out and have a nice time while running.

The first mile includes an uphill stretch before runners make their way alongside the ocean for a very flat next mile. The roads are somewhat open to cars but the police do a nice job ensuring the runners are safe on the course and stagger traffic along the way. After running through the flat section past Plymouth Rock, runners hit a seaside neighborhood and park before making a right turn back onto Court Street where the race starts and finishes. A nice little uphill sprint into the finish line allows runners to leave it all on the course in the final mile before leveling off and being greeted by a nice crowd of supporters merrily cheering runners into the finish line.

Overall a really fun night of running followed by dinner and drinks with our friends right near the finish line at a great, little downtown restaurant.

Finished the Winter Lights 5K with a time of 25:06, good for 8:04/miles.
